Plants and fungi have a life cycle characterized as an ';alternation of generations,'; which occurs as two separate plant stuctures or is seen in a cytological progression represented only by the behavior of nuclei. This phrase a reference to two generations, one haploid or with one set of chromosomes in the cells and one with two sets and called diploid (mono=1; di=2; ploidy refers to the genome).





The gametophyte produces the gametes. Most often the gametes are distinguishable as egg and sperm. When fused into a zygote the diploid state is initiated. Eventually and probably it can be said sooner or later, certain diploid germ cells under meiosis to become haploid and function as gametes.





So the haploid form in a plant's life cycle is call the gametophyte, no matter how prevalent it is such as the green moss structure or how reduced it is comparatively such as the moss capsule with the haploid spores.





The sporophyte in a plant life cycle is then the sporophyte.For example, in flowering plants, the tree is the sporophyte because it is haploid.
