was trashed by the studio that made it ....
The movie ';It's A Wonderful Life'; was a box
office flop and lost money for RKO.
Long before the advent of video or cable a
movie had basically only one chance to
make revenue -- at the theatre
When the movie bombed --
RKO let it sit in their storehouse and
dropped it off their shelves never to be
seen again
27 YEARS LATER the copyright on the
movie was lost and it was not renewed
{back then, a copyright only lasted 27 years}
That brings us to 1973 { 1946 + 27 }
After the movie became public domain
the tv networks noticed this immediately
and started broadcasting it on the christmas
holidays as a just a filler for other shows that
had been on holiday breaks..
No one - not the studos or the networks -
could have ever guessed that it would
find an audience 27 years later
It has since become a standard as one
of the most beloved
holiday movies of all time --

True or False ?
**TRUE OR FALSE: '; It's A Wonderful Life'; was a flop and only got noticed when RKO dumped it 27 years later?
.
Yes: Very true.
How's that for irony?!
Actually, it was the kind of movie that should have fared well back then. I have no idea why it didn't. (Perhaps because it was not too long after the war (WW2) and people were looking for movies that were cheerful and fun?)
But even thought I was a kid in that era, I had never heard of the movie until it started being shown on TV.
Love it now of course!!!
